A Prison in Brazil Hasn’t Had an Escape Thanks to Its Guard Geese
Who knew geese could work in prison security? In Brazil, one facility does exactly that. The São Pedro de Alcântara Penitentiary has put the birds on perimeter duty to keep escapes in check. Strange as it sounds, the geese are now part of the guard lineup.
Since around 2023, a group of geese has taken over duties at this prison in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina. Lovingly referred to as “geese agents,” they patrol the green space between the prison’s inner fence and the main outer wall. It’s their job to be alert at all times and sound the alarm with their loud and unmistakable honking if they spot something suspicious
According to Marcos Roberto de Souza, the prison’s director, the geese’s ability to keep watch 24/7 is what sets them apart from other security measures. He even said that they are way more effective than dogs when it comes to keeping an eye on things.

Prisons can be expensive to run, especially when it comes to security. Guard dogs require training and regular vet visits. They even need daily attention from their handlers. Geese, on the other hand, are a lot more low-maintenance. They don’t need training for scent tracking or learning specific alert barks. They simply do what geese do best, honk and flap at the first sign of trouble.
Geese also cost a lot less to maintain than dogs. The prison doesn’t have to worry about feeding expensive dog food or investing in costly training programs. The geese are just as effective, and they work around the clock, unlike the dogs, who need to rest between shifts.
One of the biggest advantages of using geese as prison guards is that they can’t be bribed. Unlike dogs, which might be enticed with treats or affection, they are naturally territorial and won’t stop honking at any sign of movement. They’re not swayed by food or rewards, which makes them a reliable choice for security.

The São Pedro de Alcantara Penitentiary is now home to a group of “geese agents” who have been accepted as part of the security team. The human guards respect them and consider them colleagues in maintaining order. After all, they work tirelessly, and as Souza points out, they don’t take breaks.
With the success of the geese patrol, there’s potential for this innovative security solution to spread to other prisons. The idea of using geese is gaining traction, with some praising the cost-effectiveness and reliability of the feathered guards. Aside from saving money, it’s also about creating a system that works.
