Wildlife might seem all business with hunt, hide, and survive. But once in a while, it delivers some comedy gold. Nikon's Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards just dropped its latest collection of entries, and the results are pure joy. Each image feels like a perfectly timed joke, proving animals have more expressive range than we often give them credit for.
Out in the savannah, a cheetah sits tall and proud until its massive jaw stretches wide in what looks like a deep, unbothered yawn. It is the kind of expression you’d expect during a Monday morning meeting, not the middle of the wild. Still, even predators have their lazy moments.
Caught in crisp detail, this heron’s head feathers are all standing on edge like it just saw its own reflection after a rough nap. One wild feather hangs from its beak, as if it is working through something. The intensity of its stare suggests this bird means business, but its look says otherwise.

Wildlife Comedy / IG / This funny photo of a thoughtful golden monkey almost made it to the finals!
This young golden monkey seems straight out of an animated movie. Holding a tall bamboo stalk with one hand and nibbling another, it gazes out with eyes that say it is thinking deep thoughts.
With one massive paw covering its eyes, this brown bear might be regretting its life choices. The moment looks almost too human. Maybe it missed a salmon. Maybe it remembered hibernation isn’t for another few weeks.
The timing here is flawless. A goose takes flight just as its feet skim the water, wings fully stretched like a gymnast mid-vault. It is all grace and muscle, but also a bit chaotic.
There is a deer in the forest playing what can only be described as a game of hide-and-seek. Only its head and antlers peek out from behind a wide tree trunk. Its tilted expression looks suspiciously like it has caught mid-scheme.
This ground squirrel stands on its hind legs holding a pink poppy in perfect position, nose buried in the bloom. It could be sniffing or nibbling, but either way, it feels oddly gentle.
Another predator steals the show by not looking threatening at all. A leopard, likely mid-yawn, has its mouth stretched so wide it could be mistaken for shouting.

Wildlife Comedy / IG / Is this deer eavesdropping or something?
One side of its face peeks out from the tree like it’s eavesdropping. There’s a slight tilt, maybe suspicion, maybe sass.
Just a second after takeoff, a goose in the background looks like it's about to trip mid-air. One leg dangles low, wings flailing offbeat, while its partner glides smoothly ahead.
This golden monkey doesn’t seem to care about the camera. With one thin shoot sticking from its mouth like a toothpick, and eyes that seem focused elsewhere, it looks lost in thought.

Wildlife Comedy / IG / The spiky-headed bird from earlier deserves a second look.
The fierce expression, the lighting, the way it holds its neck, everything screams accidental comedy.
It is hard to tell if they’re fighting or gossiping. These three birds are caught in mid-air with wings spread and beaks open, looking like they are hashing out serious drama.
Set against a vast, icy backdrop, two young polar bears sit upright, one draping an arm over the other’s shoulder. It is the kind of image that makes people forget these are apex predators.
As a pelican opens wide for what should’ve been an easy fish grab, a smaller bird photobombs the shot mid-air. Right above the gaping bill, it’s a split-second miss that looks like a near disaster.
