Least Demanding Pets That Won’t Ruin Your Furniture or Your Sanity
Not everyone wants a pet that sheds everywhere, chews up furniture, or demands constant attention. Some people just want a quiet, easygoing companion that fits neatly into their lifestyle without causing chaos. If that sounds like you, there are plenty of pets that are low-maintenance, don’t need excessive care, and won’t turn your living room into a disaster zone.
Betta Fish

Although betta fish are excellent jumpers and need covered tanks, they require minimal feeding (once a day) and weekly water changes. Their vibrant colors and interactive nature make them a great addition to any home. They’re also smart and can pick up tricks like following a finger.
Guinea Pigs

Unlike hamsters, guinea pigs are social creatures that actually enjoy interacting with their owners—but they won’t throw a fit if you’re busy. They love munching on hay, exploring their enclosure, and “popcorning” (an adorable little jumping motion) when they’re excited. They do best in pairs, so be prepared to get at least two, but their needs are simple: fresh veggies, a clean enclosure, and a little bit of attention.
Hermit Crabs

These little crustaceans are perfect for those who don’t mind a companion for 10-15 years who lives shuffling about and switching shells. They only need a small tank with sand, climbing toys, and basic food like pellets. Keep in mind that despite their name, hermit crabs need socializing and shouldn’t be kept alone.
Hamsters

Hamsters are nocturnal, independent, and perfect for small spaces. They need a cage, a wheel, and a diet based on specially formulated hamster pellets to thrive. Their playful antics and low-maintenance lifestyle make them ideal for busy individuals or families. Unfortunately, they live for only around 2-3 years.
Leopard Geckos

Leopard geckos are hardy and beginner-friendly reptiles. They require a small terrarium, live insects for food, and minimal handling. Their docile nature and fascinating patterns make them a low-effort yet captivating pet. These guys live up to 25 years and will require some forethought.
Snails

Snails are the ultimate chill pets. They’re happy with a small terrarium, soil, moderate temperature, and the occasional veggie snack. Their slow movements are weirdly mesmerizing and mean they’re at low risk of escaping. Depending on the species, expect them to be around for a few months to 25 years.
Sea Monkeys

Remember those kits from childhood? Sea monkeys are still a thing and are as easy as ever. Add water, watch them hatch, and feed them once a week. It’s like having a fun, self-contained ecosystem. These critters live for months but have sometimes lived for up to five years.
Turtles

Turtles are the ultimate laid-back pets. Caring for them requires a clean tank, UVB light, and a mix of greens and protein. Still, they need a tank around five times an adult turtle’s length. Anyone caring for them must disinfect their hands afterward, as they could carry salmonella.
African Dwarf Frogs

These tiny frogs are perfect for those who are into aquatic pets but don’t want the hassle. They’re peaceful, easy to feed (think brine shrimp), and don’t need much space. They also have relatively less dependence on the company.
Rabbits (Holland Lop)

Holland Lops are the sweethearts of the rabbit world. While their temperament can vary slightly, they’re mostly quiet and cuddly and thrive on a hay, pellets, and veggie diet. Set up a safe space for them to lounge, and you’ll have a happy, fluffy, low-maintenance companion.
Parakeets

These colorful little birds are full of personality. They’re also easy to care for—keep their cage clean and their food and water fresh. Their cheerful chirping and playful antics can brighten up any room. They need around 30 minutes of social interaction—a small price compared to most pets.
Chinchillas

Chinchillas might look high-maintenance with their thick, plush fur, but they’re actually quite easy to care for. Instead of traditional baths, they take dust baths to stay clean, and they don’t have much of an odor. They need a spacious cage with plenty of areas to jump, but aside from that, they’re low-drama and easygoing.
Fancy Mice

Fancy mice are tiny yet endlessly entertaining. They don’t need much—just a cage, fresh food, and water. Ideally, they should be kept in twos or threes. And while they aren’t as interactive as rats, they’re fun to watch and require very little effort beyond keeping their space clean and giving them fresh food and water.
Tarantulas

Don’t let their creepy reputation fool you—tarantulas are low-maintenance. They need a small tank, some live insects, and minimal handling. If you’re into exotic pets, they’re fascinating to observe and surprisingly docile. There are around 1,000 species, including the colorful Mexican Redknee Tarantula.
Praying Mantis

Praying mantises are captivating and surprisingly easy to care for. They need a small enclosure, some twigs to climb, and live insects like crickets for food. Watching them hunt and move with precision and striking their signature praying pose can be fascinating.
