Morocco’s Unique Goats and Their Tree-Climbing Skills

Way out in Morocco’s southwest, something unusual plays out above the dry landscape: goats, balanced high in the branches of Argan trees. They don’t seem bothered by the height. In fact, they climb and leap through the trees like it’s second nature—just to get a bite of the fruit they love.

The Argan tree holds more than just shade. Its fruit is rich and nutty, and goats can't get enough of it. Once they reach the branches, they munch happily, sometimes squeezing several onto a single tree.

Beyond the novelty, this behavior has real ecological value. When goats eat the Argan fruit and later pass the seeds, they help replant the very trees they climb. Locals have watched this routine for generations. What strikes visitors as strange is simply part of daily life here. These goats aren’t just scaling trees for fun—they’re woven into the way this landscape works.

With surprising balance, they plant their hooves on narrow branches, looking as calm as seasoned climbers. It’s not unusual to see ten or more perched in a single tree, none of them the least bit fazed.

A recent video by Animalogic, a wildlife-focused YouTube channel, showcased the scene for a global audience, capturing the goats’ precision, boldness, and the surreal image of livestock high above the desert floor.

Sure, it’s a curious sight—but there’s more going on than just goat acrobatics. Their seed-spreading helps the Argan trees regenerate, which in turn supports local farmers and fuels the Argan oil trade that’s so important to the region.

It’s a strange but beautiful kind of teamwork. The goats aren’t trying to help, but their love of fruit has a real impact. It’s a small reminder that nature doesn’t always follow straight lines—it finds its own creative way.
