The White Swiss Shepherd looks a lot like a white German Shepherd, and that’s mostly accurate. The breed came from a white strain of German Shepherds, a color once discouraged in Germany. White coats were even listed as a fault in the breed standard, causing their decline. In the U.S., though, breeders kept them going, and in 1917, the American Kennel Club registered the first white strain.
These American dogs later became the base for the European White Swiss Shepherd. A male named Lobo, born in 1966, is seen as the breed’s founder in Switzerland. More dogs arrived from the U.S. in the 1970s to grow the gene pool. The Swiss Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1991, followed by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. The U.K. Kennel Club added it to its pastoral group in 2017.
